Summer Concert for Kids with The Happy Pirates this Wednesday - and Remembering the Original "Happy Pirate" Gary Smith

Summer Concerts for Kids

Our next Concert for Kids is this Wednesday, August 14, featuring the beloved children’s band, The Happy Pirates! Join us at the Spiegel Pittsford Community Center at 6:30pm for a night of adventure, skits, jokes and lively music. The Happy Pirates perform a mix of original songs, popular children’s music and pirate-themed storytelling than keep children entertained and engaged. We’ll have face painting too, and delicious treats available for purchase from Kona Ice.

This past July, beloved Rochester children's entertainer Gary the Happy Pirate (whose real name was Gary Smith) passed away, leaving behind a legacy of joy, kindness and community spirit. Gary became a local legend through his engaging performances in the children's television show "Gary the Happy Pirate," which aired in the 1990s. The show featured songs, skits and education segments that entertained and inspired a generation of children in the Rochester area.

Beyond television, Gary made a significant impact through his work with local charities. His annual charity events, such as the "Pirate Toy Fund," became a staple of the community, providing thousands of toys to children in need each holiday season. His passing left an indelible mark on the Rochester area, not only through his entertainment, but also through his commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of children and families.

Gary's legacy lives on through the three new "happy pirates" to whom he handed over his ship. The new crew includes Captain Gully, described as a ukulele-playing, fun-loving leader; Scuttle, the prankster; and Sharkbait, the silly crew-mate with a big heart. The three grew up watching Gary the Happy Pirate and are proud to continue his work in children's entertainment and philanthropy. The Pirate Toy Fund will continue. This fall, it will be dedicated to the memory of Gary Smith.

We're so honored to welcome The Happy Pirates as the final kids’ concert of our season! The concert is free and open to the public and will take place at the Spiegel Pittsford Community Center Field beginning at 6:30pm. The Spiegel Pittsford Community Center is located at 35 Lincoln Avenue. Find complete information on our Concerts for Kids Event page on the Town website.
